Book Review: The Revolving Door of Life by Alexander McCall Smith

I love to travel, but sometimes I like to do it from the comfort of my armchair – snuggled up with a good book. So I’ve decided to share some of these ‘virtual’ travels here too.

If you haven’t already tried one of Alexander McCall Smith’s episodic novels then you’re missing out! The Corduroy Mansions series is set in Pimlico in London and the 44 Scotland Street series is set in Edinburgh.

The Revolving Door of Life is the tenth book in the Scotland Street series, first published in The Scotsman newspaper. As it’s written for daily publication, each short chapter has a story of its own, as part of an overall narrative which weaves together stories of several of the residents (or former residents) of Scotland Street. I love Alexander McCall Smith’s ability to write in such a relaxed and relaxing way – the book gently lulls you and you find it’s finished before you expected! Set firmly in the Scottish capital, the book covers the importance of kilts for small boys, findings of important works of art and slightly suspect claims to heraldry.

If you want to try the series from the beginning you can start with 44 Scotland Street – and will have 10 books worth of stories to enjoy! The latest book is only out in hardback – but I enjoy them so much I can rarely hold out long enough for the paperback edition!

Carli and Luke’s Lauderdale House Wedding

Carli & Luke are a lovely couple with a beautiful little boy, Curtis. They had a gorgeous ceremony and reception at Lauderdale House in Waterlow Park in North London. With talented family making the buttonholes and Carli herself making the cake, it was a very personal wedding, full of smiles and laughter – especially at the hilarious speech from the three best men!

Explore London – Horniman Museum & Gardens

A few months ago my sister sent me an article about incredible places you never knew were in London. The Horniman Museum & Gardens was top of the list and as soon as I read about it, I couldn’t wait to visit. It’s only in zone 3, not far from Forest Hill Overground station but feels a world away from central London. Although there are many different exhibits, it was the building itself and the beautiful gardens which I loved. The conservatory there particularly is spectacular – and is available for weddings… If anyone’s getting married there, do let me know as I’d love the chance to photograph a wedding in this special location!

Thomas – swinging in the sunshine

I’m sad to be missing a party at some close friends’ beautiful home on the outskirts of London this weekend – so to make up for it, I’m looking back at some photos from a gorgeous sunny day I spent there at the beginning of the summer. Their son Thomas is a big fan of the swing – as you can tell from his beaming smile – but he also laughed his way through many sandcastles and football with his parents. The evening light was just perfect – I hope the weather is this wonderful for their party this weekend and that there will be just as much merriment! x
